Playwright and Actor Caroline Bélisle: Flora, Fauna, and Femininity
When I write, I constantly return to zoology or botany. My fascination with flora and fauna guides my writing, inspiring many of the relationships between my characters and their environment, both concretely and metaphorically. I'm never more inspired than when confronted with the existence of a new mushroom.
I'm also very interested in femininity, whether it's felt, perceived or imagined. Writing characters that are resolutely feminine, yet complex and fundamentally different from one another, has proved extremely liberating in my writing, and has become like a quest that imposes itself with each new text I begin. Tempting Providence, Perchance Theatre (Conception Harbour, NL) July 27 - August 24
Based on the true story of Nurse Myra Bennett and her journey from England to Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula in 1921. Theatre Newfoundland Labrador (TNL) commissioned Robert Chafe to write this play in 2000, and hired Jill Keiley to direct it two years later. In the intervening 22 years, TNL’s hard work and dedication has seen the show travel across Canada multiple times, across the UK, Australia, and into the US with hundreds of thousands of audience members.
