Hours: Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week (evenings and weekends required)
Home Campus: Fennell (fully on-site)
Rate of Pay: Payband H (Start Rate: $35.06 per hour)

Preference will be given to qualified employees within the Full Time Support Staff bargaining unit, Appendix D (in the role for 6 consecutive months) and RPT employees who have passed probation at Mohawk College.

Job Summary
As the Theatre Technician, the incumbent provides a high level of technical expertise, guidance, and advice in the planning, and operation of the 1029 seat McIntyre Performing Arts Centre.
The facility hosts about 200 events annually, and is used by internal departments, the local community, and as a professional theatre venue. The McIntyre Performing Arts Centre is used for events of every performance discipline, including concerts, dance, theatre as well as graduations, lectures, corporate events and conferences.
This position oversees technical aspects of load-ins, set-ups, rehearsals, performances, streaming services, and loadouts (strikes). Performs and/or monitors maintenance to theatrical systems. Performs and/or monitors installation of stage equipment temporarily or permanently and ensures the security of the equipment and facilities. All technical services are provided in a professional manner with an emphasis on exemplary customer service. The position works both with internal and external clients.
What you’ll be doing:
Technical Duties
Design, build and/or install theatre operating systems that support venue activities & objectives.
Understanding objectives and delivery styles of the various artists and clients and matching them with the capabilities of various technologies and software available.
Determining and implementing alternatives to address production needs.
Set up stage equipment and changeovers.
Repairing and resolving problems with actual breakdowns and perceived equipment faults as identified by technical staff and clients.
Follow best practices and ensure safety of staff, venue clients, audience and equipment at all times.
Designing lighting, audio, video and staging requirements as per client’s instruction, and operation of all theatrical systems in the execution of events
Researching trends and developments in theatre audio, lighting, video, and rigging systems in order to provide recommendations and solutions to enhance, augment and update existing systems.
Preparing schematics, drawings and maintaining records that depict layouts of theatre and equipment configurations.
Regularly evaluating implemented solutions and plans to determine if objectives have been achieved or need to be revised.
Act as a resource to faculty and students by demonstrating equipment, facilities and/or software used in theatre and supplying technical information for such in class and/or lab situations.
Communicating procedures to technicians and clients that ensure safe operating conditions and maintain security for staff, clients, audience and equipment.
Keeping abreast of technological advances in theatre and developing a personal professional development plan that would include participation in related seminars and workshops.
Monitoring students in equipment set-up and operation for class production projects (e.g. Performance Classes, MediaFest),
Perform equipment maintenance to ensure equipment stays in a state of good repair.
Customer Service and Administration
Maintaining staff shift records and providing records for invoice purposes.
Communicating on a regular basis with clients and other members of the college community including faculty, staff, and administration in order to identify scheduled activities and assess equipment.
Monitoring expenditures of all technical functions and providing data to management for the purposes of budget planning.
Consulting with clients with regard to technical specifications and applications and making recommendations.
Develop and complete all paperwork required to facilitate event operation.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Required Skills
What you’ll bring to the role:
A 3-year diploma or degree plus certificate in Theatre Technical Production, Audio Engineering, Lighting Design, Live Event Production, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Minimum of 3 years of related experience (Lighting, Sound, Video Technical Direction etc) in a professional theatre environment, with an in-depth knowledge of theatrical systems.
Experience in a ‘Road-house’ is an asset
Experience with a variety of event types (Music, Theatre, Dance, Corporate) is an asset.
Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
