Job Description / Duties
The successful applicant will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and minor repair to all theatrical technical equipment at the Grenfell Theatre, School of Fine Arts, Memorial University. This includes responsibility for the theatre lights and control system, and the theatre sound system and projections. The post of Theatre Technician reports to the Technical Director.
In addition, the successful applicant will contribute to the teaching and learning of the School of Fine Arts. Working in tandem and consultation with Theatre Faculty, the successful applicant will be responsible for designing and delivering curriculum to Technical Theatre Production students on the topics of theatrical sound, lighting and projection, or other topics as related to the individual’s skill set. This responsibility also extends to assessing learning outcomes for students.
Technical duties include installing, testing, calibrating, and maintaining a variety of theatre lighting, sound, and projection equipment; instructing, supervising, and assessing students in the set-up and operation of tools and equipment; demonstrating correct theatre processes and protocol when in production settings; preparing (and instructing on preparation) sound, lighting, and projection cues for productions; recommending equipment and supply purchases; preparing design drawings for specialized theatre equipment; assisting in the construction of production sets and effects; overseeing general theatre maintenance; maintaining up-to-date technical information on theatre equipment; and performing related duties as required.
A flexible work schedule which includes weekends and evenings will be required.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Considerable experience (3 - 5 years) as a theatre house technician or similarly relevant experience is required; completion of an approved post-secondary technical theatre program or applicable technology program in a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Proficient knowledge of the operation, methods, and practices of the theatre is required. Suitable knowledge of digital audio consoles, lighting consoles, QLab, lighting and audio network standards (DANTE, Show-net) is required; in addition to comprehensive knowledge of safe theatre-rigging practices and general computer literacy. Excellent communication, problem solving, and interpersonal skills are also required; experience teaching or mentoring at the post-secondary level considered an asset.

Technical Theatre and Production students are required to perform various production functions on mainstage productions from 2nd to 4th year (recent seasons have included Shakespeare, Chekhov, re-imagined classics, and contemporary plays). As well, Grenfell Campus has a masterclass component which allows students to work with professionals in a particular area (such as props design and execution).
