Position description

As a vital member of an integrated team, the Resident Designer will design, teach, and mentor in the Drama and Screen Studies Program at Mount Allison, Canada’s top undergraduate university, located in Sackville NB - a Maritime gem of arts and culture. This is a continuing sessional position (9 months annually - see below for more information).

The Drama Studies program produces approximately 4 mainstage and 2-4 student productions per year. With expertise in set and costume design, the RD will design all mainstage shows, and will support the design process on smaller student productions. The heart of our program is the Motyer-Fancy Theatre, a multi-million dollar, state of the art flexible performance space in the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts – the newest addition to the award-winning Mount Allison campus.

Every second year, the RD will have the opportunity to teach the program's Theatre Design course, which introduces students to design aesthetics and logistics, with a focus on active and experiential learning. Opportunities to teach other courses may be possible. The RD is also engaged in long-term strategic planning for the program, and serves as a resource for students looking for students looking to specialize in design for set, costumes, and properties.
The structure of the position (9 month continuing, August - April annually) allows for candidates to engage in the many professional opportunities throughout the Maritimes in the spring and summer months. Sackville NB is within two hours or less of Theatre New Brunswick, Neptune Theatre, Festival Antigonish, the Charlottetown Festival, and more.

Emerging from the pandemic, the Mount Allison Drama and Screen Studies program is in a period of exciting and essential re-imagining.
