Job Description / Duties

POSITION IDENTIFICATION
Lead Shop Grip at Elia Kirby Productions Ltd (EKP), dba Great Northern Way Scene Shop (GNW).

POSITION SUMMARY
Assists in the maintenance and operations of the GNW Scene Shop.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
Reports directly to the Shop Manager. Takes direction from Project Managers, Project Coordinators, Project Leads, and Heads of Departments. Also takes direction from the CEO and General Manager.

WORK PERFORMED
Monitors the facility and surrounding grounds to ensure that the work site and surrounding areas are maintained in a safe and tidy manner
Receives and warehouses materials and other items for use in the shop, and ensures proper storage
Assists in clearing and organization of building and fabrication areas to support safe and efficient work
Assists with the loading and unloading of materials and sets from trucks
Works with project leads to assist in the installation and deinstallation (strike) of designs and/or projects at the shop and occasionally off-site
Monitors and manages the organization of waste and recycling in an efficient manner
Maintains the paint area in a safe and efficient manner for daily use
Assists in the coordination of shop space and resource allocations, and helps to prepare projects for installation off-site
Assists with efficient plant operations, including regular maintenance and cleaning duties
Follows shop and facility procedures to maintain a safe and effective work environment

Qualifications / Required Skills

QUALIFICATIONS
High school graduation with a minimum of two years professional experience in the fields of technical theatre, production services, warehousing, event logistics, and/or labour services, including post-secondary experience
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs/22 kg and effectively use handtrucks, carts, and other safe methods of moving items
Some knowledge of production and safety practices in the entertainment industry
Effective interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to understand and follow directions and to ask questions when things are unclear
Experience using customer-service skills to maintain positive working relationships with clients, vendors, and venue managers

Additional Information

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Shop Manager and/or Floor Coordinator. Takes direction from Project Leads and Heads of Departments. Also takes direction from Project Managers, Project Coordinators, the CEO, and the General Manager. May occasionally work unsupervised.

SUPERVISION GIVEN
May be required to oversee casual grip staff for short periods of time on particular tasks, although will not be a direct supervisor.

EXERCISING JUDGEMENT/IMPACT OF DECISIONS
Incumbent is responsible for conducting their work by following safe production practices at the main shop as well as off-site locations. They are also expected to take great care with materials and products at all stages of production such that the quality of work is maintained from start of project to delivery. The consequences of errors include: EKP Ltd and client projects could run at a serious resource and financial deficit, and the staff and production personnel may be seriously injured in unsafe working conditions, seriously compromising the organization's ability to operate.

WORKING CONDITIONS
GNW is currently located at 281 Industrial Avenue in Vancouver, BC. Off-site work mainly takes place at various locations throughout the Metro Vancouver area. Working conditions include working at heights on scaffolding and/or on a ladder, and/or in a high-reach (aerial lift); fumes or airborne particles requiring the use of a respirator; working with or around paint/solvents/aerosols (e.g. spray paints); using a motorized company vehicle or a leased or personal vehicle for company business. Working in non-weather conditions that may be wet, or humid, in extreme cold or heat; working with or near compressed gas cylinders or tanks; working with or near toxic or caustic chemicals, hazardous chemicals, fluorescent lamps or batteries. Exposure to loud noise levels. Outdoor weather conditions include direct sunlight, heat, cold, wind and rain.

EMPLOYMENT TERMS & REMUNERATION
This is a permanent full-time position, at 30-40 hours per week; and is eligible for group health benefits after the three-month probationary period. Shop hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, with some evening and weekend work required based on project needs. Hourly wage is $26.50-28.00/hr.
