Job Description / Duties

General Description:
The successful applicants will be generalists with competency in multiple areas of technical theatre and will be self-motivated in seeking to develop additional competencies over time. They will be adaptive thinkers, and take initiative to calmly and effectively handle unexpected, stressful and emergency situations. They will have excellent interpersonal skills and show consideration toward others.

Venue Technicians (VTs) will report to the Production Manager and will be supervised by Production Co-
ordinators, Technical Directors, Stage Managers, Designers, Event Clients and similar personnel. The VTs will work under the terms and conditions of the IATSE Local 118 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The successful applicants will be self-directed and proactive, not waiting for others before taking the initiative. They will be open to feedback and notes and willing to adapt to unexpected situations and try new things. They will communicate effectively and respectfully to various types of personnel and take personal initiative to define and meet goals.

The VTs can analyze designs, assess conditions on site and propose adaptive plans to meet the vision of their supervisors. They will be able to effectively delegate, direct, supervise and error control the work of other Heads, Assistants, and stagehands. They will model a high standard of service, professionalism, courtesy and competency. They will facilitate the professional development of other workers and treat those workers in a professional, respectful patient and encouraging manner.

They will actively engage with, uphold and comply with company policy and governing regulation. The successful applicants will proactively ensure the work site is safe, clean, organized and generally “ship-shape and Bristol fashion”. They will also proactively liaise with Administration, Building Maintenance and Patron Service workers as appropriate.

The period of employment is February 17 to July 10th 2020, negotiable, with 90 mutually committed days of work and priority access to any additional days of work that arise.

Duties may include:
• Regular, self-directed and proactive inventorying, maintenance, housekeeping and upgrading of equipment.
• Oversight of other heads and their assistants such as Stage, Paint, Lighting, Properties, Sound, Projection, and
Wardrobe.
• Training, mentorship or orientation of other stage workers, including casual heads, assistants, technicians and grips.
• Production and proactive upkeep of paperwork such as reports, manuals, work lists and cue track sheets.
• Analyzing, organizing, advancing and executing designs and projects
• Setting up, operating and dismantling theatrical equipment such as lights, sound, projection, sets, props, scenery, costumes, counter weight fly systems and stage rigging.
• Execution and coordination of emergency procedures.
• Working at heights on self-powered work platforms and ladders.
• Repeated lifting, pushing and pulling.
• Working a flexible schedule with evening, holiday and weekend work.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Minimum requirements
• Three years combined:
o post-secondary training in stagecraft and/or
o professional experience as a Head, Chief or Venue technician.
• Competency in multiple aspects of technical theatre.
• Proactive, professional comportment with excellent customer service skills
• Legally entitled to work in Canada
• Working basic knowledge of general stagecraft including scenery, stage equipment, lighting, sound and projection.
• A commitment to proactively identify and acquire Bonus Assets (see below), with management support.
• A commitment to mentor others on the job site.

Additional Information

Bonus Assets:
Applicants demonstrating any of the following will be deemed additionally suitable:
• Driver’s Licence – min CL5 and able to drive company over height cargo van.
• Familiarity with computers including; using network or cloud based file servers, computer aided drafting or sketching, spreadsheets and word processing.
• Experience supervising casual or union stage workers.
• Professional training in customer service, team building or leadership.
• Experience with Lighting Consoles such as ETC Ion, ETC Insight, or ETC Nomad
• Experience installing and operating Conventional, Moving and Colour Mixing LED lights.
• Familiarity with lighting networking and dimming such as DMX, ETC Sensor or ETCNet/Ethernet
• Familiarity with control interfaces such as MIDI or SMPTE
• Experience with digital sound consoles such as Yamaha M7CL or Yamaha TF1
• Live sound mixing experience with wireless microphones, sound networking (Dante) and mixing musical theatre with live orchestra and actors using wireless microphones.
• Experience with operation and maintenance of counter weight fly systems or theatrical stage rigging.
• Certification/Licencing such as Occupational First Aid, Firearms, Pyrotechnics, Electrical (LPEC, etc.), self- powered work platforms, WHMIS, Supervisor Safety, Fire Warden, fall arrest, or rigging.
• Experience with playback software such as Qlab or Isadora.
• Experience with basic costume maintenance, laundry, dressing, hair or makeup.
• Conversant in more than one language

Salary: $27.46/hr in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement 7% vacation and 5% Holiday pay in lieu of Statutory Holiday pay. Employer Contributions to IATSE 118 Health & Welfare Fund and IATSE 118 RRSP account. The worker will have union dues and employee contributions to the IATSE 118 RRSP account deducted at source in addition to the standard statuary deductions.
