Job Description / Duties

The Citadel Theatre, one of Canada’s largest and busiest professional, not-for-profit theatre companies and facilities, is currently seeking a Head of Scenic Carpentry. Reporting to the Director of Production and working frequently with the Technical Director, the Head of Scenic Carpentry will be responsible for the safe and effective operation of the scenic workshop.

The primary responsibility of this position is to fabricate scenery, furniture and other carpentry-related items for Citadel productions and other Citadel projects. This may also include furnishings, and repairs for the Citadel Theatre complex if requested; and the scheduling and coordination of work performed by the scenic workshop related to the Citadel’s programming and events in all spaces and on tours.

The Head Carpenter is essential for ensuring organized operation of the scenic workshop and supporting the overall success of the organization.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
-Ensure the carpentry shop staff work in a safe and healthy manner in compliance with Citadel Policies and provincial regulations.
-Participate in the development of estimates, costings, budgets and schedules and be accountable for expenditures in budget as assigned by the Director of Production and Technical Director.
-Consult on appropriate season staffing with the approval of the Director of Production and Technical Director.
-Build positive personnel relationships and resolve conflicts.
-Supervise or schedule the supervision of the setup of stage scenery in conjunction with Head of Stage Carpentry.
-In consultation with the Technical Director, determine methods, materials and any special training needed.
-Supervise all activities directly related to the operation of the scenic workshop.
-Construct the required scenic elements from approved plans, drawings and specifications.
-Produce construction drawings as necessary to facilitate the build of scenery.
-Coordinate the preparation, loading and delivery of materials and finished set pieces and tour/co-produced presentations.
-Setup and tear down of all scenery for Citadel productions, including rigging or flying of scenery, as scheduled by the Director of Production and Technical Director, with Stage Carpentry.
-Oversee and ensure the organization, maintenance and cleanliness of the scenic workshop and scenic construction equipment and tools, as well as inventory stock.
-Arrange for the appropriate care, handling and maintenance of all scenic and stage elements, in consultation with the appropriate Department Head(s) and the Director of Production and Technical Director.
-Assist the Props Dept. in the construction of certain props requiring specialized carpentry skills.
-Advise the Director of Production on recommend acquisition or improvement to scenery shop and equipment.
-Attend meetings and rehearsals as required.
-Read and abide by The Citadel Theatre policies and procedures.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Experience: 5+ Years of experience in Scenic Carpentry
Skills:
-Proficiency with carpentry power and hand tools, and their safe use.
-Excellent communication skills.
-Skilled personnel management and leadership.
-Advanced knowledge of scenic construction materials and techniques.
-Ability to interpret technical plans and drawings.
-Proficiency in computer drafting skills (Vectorworks).
-Knowledge of rigging practices.
-Health and safety best practices and requirements.

Additional Information

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

-Lift / MEWP Certified

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
-Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends as required.

Hourly Rate: $32.78 per hour, in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
