Job Description / Duties

Working with the Technical Director, the Head of Properties implements and archives the Opera’s Production Props. The individual is responsible for the building, alterations, sourcing and maintenance of Props, including rental productions.

The Head Props will be required to assist in some pre-production work; including communication with Designer, Directors, Stage Mangers and other Artistic Staff. They will assist in the scheduling operations of the Properties Department including the supervision of additional Props Assistants, Builders or Buyers, as approved by Technical Director.

The Head of Properties will work both in the shop and the theatre. They will attend all Production Meetings, Fittings (If Required), Technical Rehearsals and Post-Show Notes. During the theatre technical rehearsal process; the Head of Properties will make any adjustments required and will ensure the running crew is comfortable with the operations and techniques of the production.

The Head of Properties will be a self-motivated individual, with a strong experience in creative creations and sourcing on a budget. They will have a calm and flexible outlook and be diplomatic in dealing with fluctuations in schedule and artistic challenges. With the nature of theatrical pieces other duties may be required.

Qualifications / Required Skills

JOB DUTIES and TASKS

•Source, alter or manufacture all properties and set-dressing as desired by the Designer, as approved by the Technical Director

•Adjust and Alter creations based on notes from Artistic Directors, Designers, Technical Directors, Stage Management and Performers

•Attend all Production Meetings, Fittings (If Required), Technical Rehearsals and Post-Show Notes

•Assist in the scheduling operations of the Properties Department to achieve the artistic vision

•Supervise and instruct any additional Production Assistants, Props Assistants, Builders or Buyers, as approved by Technical Director

•Supervise and assist with all production props during Load-In, Pack-Up, and Load-Out (Both at the Rehearsal Hall and On-Stage)

•Teach techniques and operations to Performers and Running Crews

•Document and track all show-related configuration in co-operation with the Designer and Technical Director

•Manage the storage and rental of Vancouver Opera’s Properties

•Maintain accurate records of all purchases made by the Vancouver Opera

•Maintain a clean and organized work space

•Keep accurate inventories of tools, equipment, storage and materials

•Maintain and Update Properties Material SDS Reports

•Adhere to Health and Safety Standards of WorkSafeBC and Vancouver Opera



REQUIRED SKILLS
•3+ years of Professional Properties Experience (Film or Theatre)
•Reading and Writing Comprehension
•Interpersonal and Communication Skills
•Creative Problem Solving and Time Management
•Education and Experience in Props Building, Buying and Sourcing
•Comprehensive Knowledge of Theatrical Building Practices
•Valid Drivers License

•Processions Acquisition License – Restricted and Non-Restricted would be an asset

Additional Information

This is a Contract Position for 30/40 hours weekly.

Contracts dates:
October 05, 2020 - December 5, 2020
February 1, 2020 - May 1, 2020

Due to the nature of theatre and entertainment, evening and weekends hours may be required.

Salary: $28.00 per hour
