Job Description / Duties
THE OPPORTUNITY
In conjunction with the existing Technical Director and Production Manager, the Co-Technical Director is responsible for the planning, management, implementation and supervision of all technical and production elements of the Thousand Islands Playhouse productions.
Some of the key accountabilities include:
In conjunction with the existing Technical Director and Production Manager, is responsible for the day-to-day management of the production department including management of personnel, general organization and administration, scheduling, team leading/crew management, and expense management.
Supervision of all elements of technical production for performances and activities including planning, preparation, rehearsals, set ups, shows, strikes, and restore, as well as organizing technical staff.
Prepare and oversee the schedule for production activities, and supervise the successful and timely load in and out of productions and presentations.
TECHNICAL
Creating and updating Vectorworks drawings and construction drawings for each of the production set designs
Costing, locating and ordering all scenic elements including soft goods, rigging etc.
Building and/or overseeing the build of special effects, electrical devices and rigging related to any given production.
Scheduling and supervising construction of all scenic elements.
Planning, scheduling and overseeing load-ins, set-ups and strikes.
Coordinating with production department heads throughout the season and assisting where needed.
In conjunction with the Production Manager, overseeing all lighting, sound and video installs, levels sessions, onstage rehearsals and previews.
Implementing all technical aspects of the productions, within planned budgets and schedules, while maintaining high production standards.
Maintaining the safety of the workplace by helping establish and ensure all health and safety policies.
Is responsible for operating, maintaining, and safeguarding the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, projection, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of shops and stage facilities.
Effectively implement approved technical designs for productions.
Responsible for analyzing designs, costing production projects, VectorWorks drawings, and other documents as necessary for productions.
Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and plots
HEALTH & SAFETY and MAINTENANCE
Ensure the safety of the workplace by helping to establish and enforce all health, security, and safety policies and procedures and maintain a safe working environment in all production areas
Monitor and evaluate safety performance within the areas of responsibility and recommend and implement measures to bring about continuous improvement
Ensure individuals in their areas of assignment be given adequate direction, training, and instruction in the safe performance of their work, and that it is performed without undue risk
Conduct regular reviews of equipment set-up, and work with staff to ensure safe practices are followed
Monitor the condition of departmental equipment including ladders and lifts, lighting, sound, rigging, and shop equipment.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Graduate of a recognized program in Technical Theatre
Minimum 7 years’ experience as a Technical Director or similar position with proof of success
Experience with a variety of types of live performance including music, musicals, and theatre
Experience with a wide range of experience levels and proven ability to lead and mentor
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects with tight deadlines
Ability to lead and supervise a crew
Strong VectorWorks Drafting skill with the ability to read and produce technical drawings and schematics in CAD (Vectorworks)
Excellent technical skills in scenic carpentry, stage carpentry, rigging, lighting, sound, video
Practical knowledge of structural and mechanical construction for the stage, both materials and techniques, and welding
Practical knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems
Knowledge and practical experience using Microsoft Office
Confident in troubleshooting, creative problem solving, and research
Current Working at Heights, Fall Protection, Ladder Safety certificates
Holds a valid G driver's license
Salary: $1000/week
