Qualifications / Required Skills

Though we don’t expect you to be an expert in everything, the ideal candidate(s) will be able to identify strengths in several of the following areas:
● Canadian Theatre
● The Performing Arts
● Summer Festivals
● An area of theatre making including but not limited to one or more of the following: playwriting, devised creation, designing, acting, directing, technical arts, producing
● Shakespeare and/or related literary and/or non-literary traditions
● The non-profit sector
● Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

In the cover letter, applicants should speak to their suitability as outlined in the Job Description, in addition to addressing the following:
● Your approach to leadership, using examples of other models that speak to your values
● Your approach to managing a team of staff and understanding of wellness-based workplace practices
● Your practice of theatre, knowledge of Shakespeare and related works and their impact and relevance in modern day Canada

Additional Information

Compensation
● Salary range is $58,000 to $62,000 for full time position (to be split if a job share).

This is a full-time year-round position with a target start date of June 1, 2022 (negotiable). Though working remotely can be considered, it is expected that the successful candidate(s) will reside primarily in Saskatoon. Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival (SOTS) is a vibrant part of the Saskatoon theatre community. Our festival has been a staple of summer in Saskatoon since 1985, attracting over 10,000 visitors annually. Each year, our audience joins us to enjoy dynamic interpretations of classic Shakespeare plays, as well as other works by Saskatchewan artists all on the backdrop of the beautiful South Saskatchewan River and our brand-new festival site on the Meewasin Trail.
SOTS has a long and exciting history of innovation and cutting-edge arts programming. In 2015, the company’s 30th year, we began plans to finally make our temporary home a permanent venue. In 2019-2020, thanks to the success of our $7 million dollar Staging the Future Capital Campaign, we were able to transform our festival site from a gravel lot into a beautiful park. New infrastructure includes a permanent amphitheatre base, box office, walk-up bar with riverside deck, dressing rooms, storage building, Contemplation Circle, beautifully landscaped courtyard, and more. The site itself is now open to the public year-round to enjoy. SOTS was instrumental in changing the landscape of Saskatoon through connections with many partners and community members.

This substantial shift on the site has opened doors to new projects and prospects for the company to grow and connect to the community around it.

The 2021-22 season has been a year of change and reflection for the company as Will Brooks, Artistic Producer, made the decision to move on in November of 2021 after seven years of tremendous leadership that was instrumental in shaping SOTS into what it is today. Two local artists, Yvette Nolan and Skye Brandon, have been shepherding the company for a 1-year limited term to fulfill the requirements of the artistic director, while the organization used this time to reflect and consider how they move forward.

Paramount in our thoughts is how our organization can change now that we inhabit a public space 365 days of the year. In many ways, this is a rebirth phase for the festival as we look to what the next 35 years will be.
