What's New > Virtual Courses at TMU - Scenography
The Certificate in Design for Arts and Entertainment of the Toronto Metropolitan University will offer two virtual courses of interest in Winter 2024, therefore available coast-to-coast.
CDMP 130 - History of Arts and Scenography - Details & Registration
The first day of class is Thursday, January 18, though it is important to sign up immediately.
This course is of particular interest to early stage art department members who have perhaps have previously trained as graphic designers, interior designers, or architects--anyone, really, who would like an in-depth historical study of design for entertainment, including production design practices that persist to our day. It is a great opportunity to hone one's drawing skills while examining some exciting primary sources.
Students will learn to recognize cultural and scenographic trends as they conduct primary and secondary source research. The scenographic tradition will be addressed in terms of ceremony interpreting text for constructed or virtual worlds, relationship-building in communities, and collaborative work structures.
A course outline is available to the applicant upon request from Valérie C. Kaelin, MFA, DGC, ADC, award-winning art director. While the lectures are delivered in English, Francophone members may submit their assignments in French, since the instructor is fluently bi-lingual.
CFPN 601 - Scenography II - Production Design - Details & Registration
The first day of class is Wednesday, January 17 @ 6:30 pm, though it is important to sign up immediately.
This studio course models the development of production concepts from script analysis, identifying time-space requirements and research methodologies, to visual proposals for the material culture of constructed realities, whether live/immersive events, film, video, or staged/directorial photography.
A course outline is available to the applicant upon request. This course is normally offered to those who have successfully completed FPN501 - Scenography I - Art Direction, but can be waived upon interview with the award-winning scenographer, Sean Mulcahy.
