Job Overview
The Visual Arts Specialist leads the design, production and installation of the detailed scale model structures, neighbourhoods and landscapes of Little Canada, as well as creating the scenes that tell the uniquely Canadian stories in our world. This role leverages a combination of visual arts skills, research and layout design skills, 2D design and physical production capabilities using CAD (or Illustrator), and requires the ability to work in miniature proportions.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and perform required maintenance and repair required on the structures, neighbourhoods and landscapes of Little Canada, including integrated lighting repair.
- Design and create, using a wide variety of visual arts skills, the detailed scenes, landscapes, scenery and stories for new destinations, as well as for new additions to existing destinations.
- Working with the Little Me business team, manage the daily Little Me placement process to place 3D printed guest “Little Me’s” in pre-determined places, capture and send image via automated process, and log for future repair or replacement.
- Design for and operate a laser cutter as a primary tool of fabrication to produce physical parts from AutoCAD (or Adobe Illustrator).
- Research source material and information needed to design accurate models and scenes.
- Understand and embrace the diversity in Canadian Culture in order to maintain and contribute to a database of welcoming and inclusive Canadian Scenes and Stories.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with the Destinations and Business Operations teams.
- Embrace the Little Canada Health and Safety Program
- Embody the values of Little Canada.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Qualifications and Experience
- Demonstrated experience and proficiency in the use of a wide variety of visual arts skills; i.e., painting, colour theory, sculpture, print-making, drawing, etc.
- A diploma or undergraduate degree in a visual arts field is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience and proficiency in AutoCAD (or Adobe Illustrator) for the purpose of designing and producing laser cut model parts.
- Experience with 3D modelling software such as Rhino3D is an asset.
- Graphic design experience with Illustrator or Photoshop is an asset.
- Proficiency in accurate measurement and the appreciation of fine tolerances.
- Demonstrated research skills, and the ability to utilize a wide variety of information sources to create 2D plans for scenes and stories.
- Proficiency in converting drawings, pictures or other reference information to scale model structures.
- Previous experience building model structures/objects and familiarity with model building techniques and materials is an asset.
- Carpentry and machine shop skills are an asset.
- Experience in a cultural field and a familiarity with the diversity of Canadian Culture i.e., Museum Studies, Indigenous Studies, Canadian Studies, etc. is an asset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills; ability to build rapport and work collaboratively
- Excellent organizational skills; able to plan and deliver against large pieces of work
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced team environment.
- Certification in safety programs would be an asset.
