Job Description / Duties
Duties and responsibilities include:
• Oversees, safeguards, and operates the technical assets of the theatres, including but not limited to lighting, sound, AV, clear-com, and other equipment, for productions and events occurring in the theatres (both in-house and rentals).
• Provide friendly guidance and supervision for theatre events, ensuring the client and all workers, volunteers, and patrons are operating safely and appropriately (per health and safety, fire regulations, and other protocols).
• Liaises with clients, both internal and external, and YMCA staff to coordinate renter needs and schedules for all theatre-related events, and determine the necessary technical supports, including equipment, timing, and staffing.
• Ability to troubleshoot, problem-solve, and work calmly under pressure.
• Recruits, trains, supervises and assigns paid and/or volunteer technical staff.
• Maintains and operates lighting, AV, and sound systems for productions and projects; assists renters with technical matters; troubleshoots and solves problems that may arise to ensure the best experience in the theatres.
• Able to interpret CAD plans, plots, and schematics necessary for the facilitation of production requirements.
• Able to work heights.
• Ensures and/or undertakes the safe and appropriate rigging of all equipment, including overhead (including but not limited to lighting, AV, sound gear, draperies, etc.)
• Monitors the condition of the theatres and related equipment including but not limited to lighting, sound, AV, rigging equipment, floor, walls, seating units, pianos, and other related equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints, and/or coordinates repair and replacement with Asset team; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
• Assists with the preparation and control of related budgets (i.e., equipment, supplies, technical crew, production-related, other).
• Effectively communicates within the YMCA and with clients.
• Works collaboratively with colleagues to ensure the best delivery of customer/client experience.
• Is available to work flexible hours, including irregular and extended hours, esp. evenings and weekends.
Qualifications / Required Skills
• Experience working as a theatre technician, technical director for a theatre, and/or related education in the field.
• Experience in providing positive and service-oriented client interactions is an asset.
• Experience with programming and operation of lighting consoles (Element or similar)
• Experience in live sound mixing, and with digital sound processing and related equipment (Yamaha TF3 or similar) and analogue consoles (Sound craft GB8 or similar)
• Experience with AV equipment (Christie Digital 1-DLP or similar)
• Ability to analyze and evaluate the need for technical support for various events and performances;
• Ability to plan, develop, schedule, and provide the technical support required for each event or performance.
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of various groups, vendors, co-workers, others.
• Knowledge of safe rigging practices.
• Computer literacy in Microsoft Office 365 including Office Suite, Teams, SharePoint, and One Drive.
• Working knowledge of Vector works, Q-lab is an asset.
• Efficient in PC and Mac operating systems
• Organized with scheduling, staff communication, file organization and setting up systems to assist in the smooth operation of the theatre and its assets.
• Fall protection certification.
• Lift certification
• Standard First Aid and AED certification
• Evidence of a cleared police security clearance including a vulnerable sector search.
• Three professional references required.
Physical Requirements:
The Technical Director position may require moderate lifting, repetitive movements, and extended periods of standing, bending, and walking. This position will be required to travel to other YMCA branches in Calgary regularly.

Expected Hours of Work:
This is a 40-hour-per-week position, and this position is non-exempt from the YMCA Calgary Lieu Time Agreement.
Salary: $53,654.00/year - $61,000.00/year
