Job Description / Duties
Western Canada Theatre (WCT) is searching for a dynamic and creative TECHNICAL DIRECTOR (TD) to lead our production team in beautiful Kamloops, BC.
The TD supports Western Canada Theatre through proactive problem solving, prudent resource management, technical knowledge, and by providing leadership and mentorship to members of our production team. The TD reports to the Director of Production.
With broad responsibility over technical aspects of all WCT productions, the TD:
• Collaborates with the Director of Production in the hiring, leading, and managing of WCT’s technical staff to fully realize all productions.
• Works closely with the production team, creative teams, and designers to realize productions within their established parameters (schedules, budgets, staffing, etc.);
• Analyzes, evaluates, costs, and plans all technical aspects of WCT productions;
• Coordinates, leads, and assists with the build, install and tech processes in a variety of capacities, as needed;
• Undertakes and/or supervises the drafting of all construction drawings and ground plans, as needed;
• Coordinates production workflow and communication exchange between departments;
• Proactively identifies and solves problems;
• Prioritizes the health, safety, and mental well-being of all members of the production department and visiting artists;
• Coordinates and prepares the travel of WCT productions to and from co-production and touring partners;
• Assists other WCT departments with technical requirements for special events and projects;
• Responds to equipment rental requests and acts as a technical resource throughout the community;
• Assists with the planning of future capital projects, as required;
• Undertakes additional duties, including supporting external rental clients, as required.
Qualifications / Required Skills
The ‘Ideal’ Mix of Skills, Experience & Traits Might Include…
• Demonstrated experience in professional technical theatre;
• Well-rounded knowledge of lighting, sound, rigging, and special effects, scenic, properties, and costuming techniques;
• Experience with drafting in Vectorworks or AutoCAD;
• Assists in creation of a safe work environment
• A strong analytical thinker, knowing when to make decisions or when to defer to others;
• Highly organized and able to prioritize effectively to meet rigorous deadlines;
• Thrives on managing projects with finite timelines and budgets with the ability to creatively problem solve;
• Demonstrates a curiosity for continued learning in all aspects of technical theatre;
• Flexibility in schedule to allow for production needs, will include some evening and weekend hours;
• A valid Class 5 Driver’s License, with access to own vehicle, essential.
Additional Information
Position Details:
• WCT’s Technical Director role is a full-time, ongoing position.
• The role is based in Kamloops, BC, and a move to/residency within the Kamloops community is required. A relocation stipend is available, if required.
• The salary range is between $50,000 - 55,000 per year, commensurate to experience. WCT has a generous benefits package that includes an extended health plan.
• The successful candidate will ideally start early September 2023 (with flexibility).
• New hires are subject to the following conditions of employment:
o Must be able to legally work in Canada.
o All staff are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to the start of employment and may be required to provide WCT with proof of vaccination upon request.
o Must provide a recent police information check.
