Job Description / Duties

During work calls, the Technical Director will often work directly with clients and manage scheduled in-house technical crew. For performances, the Technical Director will also collaborate with the Front of House Manager and assist other Dance Centre staff as required. In addition to external clients, The Dance Centre also produces, curates and presents its own programs and you will be expected to take the majority of these including donor events.

General Duties Include

• Supervising the venue and its equipment, ensuring proper usage and preservation from damage when on scheduled shifts.
• Assuming leadership and responsibility for projects assigned.
• Directly communicating with scheduled clients on-site, determining priorities while providing polite and professional service.
• Fulfilling technical requirements as communicated by the client.
• Managing all scheduled technical crew by providing direction for safe and timely work procedures.
• Ensuring the correct installation, configuration, operation, and usage of all technical equipment; including in-house, rental, borrowed, or other external gear..
• Maintaining equipment and supply inventories, making appropriate recommendations for repair, replacement, refurbishment, upgrades as necessary
• Coordinating the daily crew schedule
• Liaising with the Front of House Manager for each scheduled performance, communicating show-specific information
• Completing show reports for each scheduled day, ensuring that each scheduled Crew and Front of House person has signed in and out correctly
• Assisting in the maintenance and troubleshooting for the other rehearsal studios in the building
• Assisting other Dance Centre operations staff to keep all required records correct and up to date, providing administrative support to the booking and invoicing process
• Representing the Dance Centre at ActSafe, BC Touring Council, CITT/ICTS and other performing arts groups.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Completion of a relevant post-secondary program in Theatre Production and Design, Stagecraft, or related field, or at least 3 years of technical theatre involvement with demonstrated experience in lighting, audio, video, stage carpentry and/or rigging.

The ideal candidate is a generalist with a broad range of abilities, able to meet the diverse needs of dance artists, and passionate about the work they undertake. They are a creative problem solver, a great communicator, unafraid to seek help or ask for changes that would improve the working environment.

These skills are often used in the Faris and are considered an asset:
• Knowledge of Worksafe BC occupational health and safety regulations; participation in company occupational health and safety
• Experience and comfort with both PC and Mac systems and Office apps
• Experience working with networks and Wi-Fi protocols
• Experience programming on an ETC Ion console
• Experience operating an Allen & Heath QU mixing desk
• Experience programming QLab, including video elements (fades, geometry, I/O, OSC networking, multiple surfaces)
• Hanging and focusing lights, and planning a hang from a lighting plot
• Setting up and mixing a small band (12 channels or less)
• Troubleshooting simple sound systems
• Hanging and focusing projectors
• Working at heights (Genie push-about and ladders)
• Independently lifting up to 50 lbs. physically, or through rigging or other solutions
• Completion of Occupational First Aid Level 1 and Live Performance Electrical Certification is an asset.

Salary: $55,000+ plus benefits which include a sign-on bonus paid at the end of the probationary period, 2-week vacation, a comprehensive health benefits package, in-service and professional development opportunities (including membership to CITT/ICTS – a $225 value), and paid time off for extended seasonal closures during the year (average of 7-10 working days total). For out-of-town applicants, a modest budget for moving expenses is available.

We are currently recruiting for the position of Technical Director. This full-time position will function under an averaging agreement – working hours will vary depending on event schedules and requirements, often during evenings and weekends.
