Job Description / Duties

Sudbury Theatre Centre produces a variety of shows each season which are the leading responsibility of the Technical Director position and external rentals occupying the facility.

Reporting to the General Manager, the Technical Director (TD) oversees lighting, sound, video, props, wardrobe, flys, carpentry and paint shops and their seasonal heads of departments staff to deliver extraordinary productions across two venues. The TD brings significant experience, a deep love of delivering artistic visions on time and on budget and an appreciation for the unique challenges each show presents.

The successful TD will be joining a busy production department consisting of the venue’s full-time House Techs and one seasonal House Tech (once the offsite venue is complete), a Production Stage Manager and Production Coordinator, a Seasonal Production Supervisor/Production Manager and a Facilities Caretaker. The start date is flexible but, ideally, the new TD will begin work in early summer 2022. This is a full-time, year-round position at the performance venue, Sudbury Theatre Centre.

The TD is responsible for all technical elements of STC, including:

- Costing out shows based on preliminary and final designs, in collaboration with the Project Team
- Keeping track of ongoing costs and expense reporting
- Working with various departments on innovative solutions to problems
- Creating production schedules, in collaboration with the Production Stage Manager and Project PM
- Supervising builds in the carpentry and wardrobe shops
- Supervising the installation, strike and tech week of all productions; if interested, the TD may be more hands-on with departments depending on needs and capacity
- Ensuring rigging and work overhead be done safely and appropriately
- Ensuring the maintenance, on an ongoing basis, of all production equipment
- Maintaining an up-to-date inventory of production equipment and drafting of the space
- Participating in the selection of production equipment, the planning of long-term improvements and maintenance for the facility

Qualifications / Required Skills

- A graduate of a recognized theatre program or equivalent professional experience
- Strong knowledge of current theatrical production equipment and processes
- More than three years experience as a TD or PM with a broad working knowledge of all elements of production applicable to a regional theatre
- Strong drafting, Vectorworks/Autocad and computer skills
- Strong carpentry knowledge
- Strong rigging and working at heights knowledge
- Experience in budget tracking and maintaining material and labour budgets for shows, overhead and capital
- Strong interpersonal and leadership abilities; experience managing work crews is an asset
- Passion for mentorship and interest in training those early in their careers
- Ability to assess, ensure and promote health and safety in all areas (including respectful workplace conditions)
- Bilingual, French/English is an asset

Additional Information

- Salary based on a 40-hour workweek with fluctuating hours during tech weeks; weekend availability is a must during productions
- A moving allowance is available for out-of-town candidates
