Job Description
Ballet Jörgen is Canada’s most active touring dance company, performing across Canada and into the United States each season. The Technical Director will supervise the Company’s technical crew and local theatre crew for all Ballet Jörgen performances, using their experience to ensure the smooth and safe presentation of all performances and events. The Technical Director will tour with the Company, providing hands-on support as necessary and supervision for all technical aspects of the productions. A desire to travel to small communities from coast to coast across all ten Canadian provinces and into the United States is a must, as is a valid drivers license.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Providing technical expertise and consultation for all performances and events, at home in Toronto and on tour;
• Working with the technical crew to maintain & transport all sets, props and other production elements;
• Supervising and assisting local theatre crew – professional and volunteer – with all performance setups including sets, large props, lighting, and dance floor;
• Supervising and assisting local theatre crew – professional and volunteer – with all performance strikes;
• Contacting theatres for technical information with assistance from the Production Manager;
• Assisting the Production Manager and other technical crew with performance paperwork including venue information, technical rider information and lighting information;
• Updating paperwork for each ballet toured including notes on each venue;
• Hiring part time staff for events as necessary in consultation with Production Manager;
Qualifications / Required Skills
Requirements
• Completion of an accredited post-secondary program in technical theatre or the equivalent combination (3 years or more) of experience and education;
• Professional experience as a Technical Director or head technician;
• Knowledgeable in scenic construction and fly systems & fixed grid rigging;
• Ability to read and produce technical drawings;
• Able to drive production vehicles – 26’ straight truck, cube, vans, etc;
• Valid passport;
• Strong written and verbal communication skills a must;
• Experience with QLab software;
• Moderate experience in computer aided drafting and knowledgeable with AutoCAD an asset;
• Must be self-motivated and possess good organizational and time management skills;
• Punctual, organized and able to perform tasks independently;
• Good relationship building skills;
• Must be able to handle stressful situations and deadline pressure while ensuring accuracy;
• Skilled in major computer applications related to work including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook;
• Some physical work will be required, including but not limited to heavy lifting, climbing ladders, aerial lifts and working at heights;
• Work will include evenings and weekends;
• French an asset.

The Technical Director will report to the Production Manager and Artistic Director.
Ballet Jörgen’s 2022-2023 season will include tours of Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet, The Nutcracker, Cinderella and a mixed repertoire “Small Halls” performance. Touring will take place across Canada and into the United States.
