Job Description / Duties

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Attending rehearsals and creating calling scripts and running cue sheets and paperwork for all performances and events;
• Compiling and maintaining a blocking script for sets and props coming and going throughout the show;
• Preparing the required paperwork for running crew and disseminating it to them for all performances and events;
• Working with the Technical Director, Wardrobe Manager and Lighting Director to maintain, transport and store all sets, props and other production elements;
• Assisting with all performance/event load ins and load outs and from the Ballet Jörgen warehouse and studio space and performance venues as necessary;
• Calling lighting, sound, fly and other cues during rehearsals and performances;
• Coordinating the movement of props and set pieces with dancers and crew both in studio and onstage;
• Assisting with large prop assembly and prop pre-sets as needed in studio & spacing rehearsals in each venue for each production;
• Spiking all specials, set pieces, standard stage markings and quick change areas when required in each theatre, consulting with Artistic Director and Lighting Director as necessary;
• Supervising the house crew in each venue – both professional and volunteers – for rehearsal and performance;
• Ensuring all sound files needed for performances and theatre rehearsals are present, accurate and working on the sound laptop;
• Ensuring the video camera is set up for archival recording of all performances;
• Ensuring all on deck spaces are clean and clear, marked for hazards, site lines and blackouts, and secured for safety in partnership with the Technical Director i.e. cables taped down, booms marked, crossover cleared/blocked as directed by Artistic Director;
• Confirm all dancers are on site and Local Participants are signed in half an hour before the start of the performance and signed out at end of performance;
• Ensure first aid kit is present and appropriately supplied in Stage Manager’s console and includes items specific to cast members as needed;
• Preparing and filing post-show reports after each performance/event;
• Prop management, storage and minor prop repairs, including keeping props in top working order at all times;
• Sharing driving responsibilities of production and dancer vehicles;
• General studio/storage upkeep;
• General Warehouse upkeep.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Requirements
• Completion of an accredited post-secondary program in technical theatre specializing in Stage Management or the equivalent combination (5 years or more) of stage management experience and education;
• Must have theatrical and/or dance stage management experience;
• A valid drivers license is a must. Duties will include driving production vehicles;
• Valid passport;
• Excellent organizational and communication skills;
• Working knowledge of current safety standards;
• Must be self-motivated and possess good organizational and time management skills;
• Punctual, organized and able to perform tasks independently;
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal;
• Good relationship building skills;
• Must be able to handle stressful situations and deadline pressure while ensuring accuracy;
• Skilled in major computer applications related to work including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook;
• Work will include evenings and weekends;
• French an asset;
• Touring experience an asset.

Additional Information

Ballet Jörgen’s 2024-2025 season will include tours of Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet, The Nutcracker, and Sleeping Beauty. Touring will take place across Canada.

Contract Length:
October 7, 2024 to May 11, 2025 (Expected)

Hours:
Up to 46 hours/week

Salary: $1,050/week

Ballet Jörgen is Canada’s most active touring dance company, performing across Canada and into the United States each season. The Stage Manager will work closely with the Company’s other technical crew as well as the dancers and artistic staff. The Stage Manager will call all lighting, sound, fly and other cues during rehearsals and performances and will be diligent in their preparations including attend studio rehearsals and creating calling scripts and running cue sheets. The Stage Manager will tour with the Company, so a desire to travel to small communities from coast to coast across all ten Canadian provinces and into the United States is a must, as is a valid drivers license.
