Job Description / Duties
The Layout Carpenter works alongside the Master Carpenter and Scenic Carpenter in all phases of construction, assembly and finishing for all Mainstage productions. Also, all work must be performed according to the standards set by the Master Carpenter and Technical Director. The Layout Carpenter will assist the carpentry department in maintaining the shop and performing work in a safe and orderly manner.
The position is full-time seasonal, with the season running roughly from late September to mid-April (exact dates TBD).
Qualifications / Required Skills
- A degree or diploma in Theatre Production, plus a minimum of 3 years work experience in a theatre scene shop or commercial theatrical scene shop. A combination of experience and training will be considered in lieu of formal education.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
- Ability to work independently on assigned projects with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated knowledge of theatrical construction methods, using wood products, metal, foam and other materials used in scenic construction techniques.
- Competency in metalworking techniques and safe use of metalworking tools.
- Competency in use or woodworking and use of woodworking tools such as table saws, radial arm saws, bandsaws, routers, circular saws and other power tools and hand tools.
- Experience in basic stage rigging and the use of single-speed chain hoists.
Fall protection certification and First Aid certifications are assets.
Additional Information
The successful candidate must provide their own basic carpentry tools, for which they will receive a monthly rental fee while on contract.
This successful candidate must be a member in good standing of IATSE Local 63, or willing to attain membership upon hiring.
After the successful completion of one season, this position is subject to recall on subsequent seasons.
Salary: $30.23/hr with seasonal increases.
