Job Description / Duties

The Blyth Festival is currently searching for a candidate to fill the seasonal position of Head Scenic Carpenter for the 2025 summer season. The contract will start April 28, 2025, and conclude August 24, 2025. The work of this position will take place both indoors and outdoors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Head Carpenter will manage and oversee the Blyth Festival scene shop, work closely with the carpentry team and report to the Technical Directors (TD). The responsibilities include but are not limited to those normally associated with a similar position in other professional Canadian theatre companies. They will include:

• Oversee all aspects of the scene shop including day to day use and maintenance of tools, ordering of materials, building of sets, and daily cleanup.
• Collaborate with PM & TDs to create construction plans, shop drawings, material and cut lists
• Building all required scenic elements in such a way that honour the design, can safely transported to the venue and can be efficiently changed over during the repertory season.
• Work with the PM, TDs and designers to facilitate the designs as presented and within budgets
• Supervise and manage the work of the carpenters and other casual staff
• Supervise any other staff member, when using the tools and scene shop facilities, to ensure they are appropriately trained and follow approved policies and procedures.
• Ensure that health and safety policies and procedures are met at Blyth Festival buildings.
• Attend all Production meetings, and dress rehearsals as required

Qualifications / Required Skills

REQUIRED SKILLS:

• Scenic carpentry experience
• Strong and motivated work ethic
• Leadership and problem-solving skills
• Team player
• Working knowledge of Health & Safety policies
• First Aid and Working at Heights are required (Festival can assist with certification if necessary)
• Comfort working on ladders (A-frame and Extension)
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Valid G Driver’s License an asset

Salary: $1,091/wk + 4% vacation pay

In 2025, the Blyth Festival will produce a repertory season of four Canadian plays (2 world premieres) on the Margaret Stephens Stage, and one stand-alone production on the Harvest Stage.

The Blyth Festival production facilities include a 12000 sq ft, fully equipped carpentry, paint, prop and wardrobe shop, as well as office space, storage and rehearsal studio.
