Job Description / Duties

THE POSITION
As the Cutter, you are responsible for the quality standards of the interpretation of designs to ensure functionality during performances and remount of existing shows, along with efficient time management. In this role, you will act in a supervisory capacity of Seamstresses to ensure proper workflow and consistency.

HIGHLIGHTED DUTIES OF THE ROLE
• Revise initial patterns as required.
• Attend dress rehearsals and fittings; document changes and adjustments as required.
• Create costumes with information provided by designers.
• Research the period, style, and techniques required to achieve the concept of a designer to maintain the design integrity through the interpretation of the sketch.
• Create flat patterns and draping for specific dancers.
• Determine the yardage for fabric and trims.
• Cut fabric for costumes from pattern.
• Fit costumes to dancers, correct patterns, and alter costumes as necessary.
• In consultation with the Head of Wardrobe, direct, prepare and assign work for Seamstresses.
• Assist with orientation and training where required.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The Wardrobe department is a fast-paced environment where meeting multiple deadlines on an on-going basis is required. The Cutter utilizes standard equipment associated with a wardrobe department. Physical requirements include standing for long periods of time preparing patterns, cutting fabric, and kneeling and bending during fittings. This position works under a Collective Agreement with I.A.T.S.E Local 63.

Qualifications / Required Skills

WHAT YOU BRING
• Post-secondary education related to theatre.
• Five years’ experience in a costume shop or professional theatre company as a Cutter; an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
• Experience with fittings, fabric selection, and quantity estimations.
• Excellent knowledge and experience in costume construction techniques.
• Working knowledge of costume history, fabric types and uses.
• Understanding of period shape and how to adapt it to theatrical costumes.
• Good organizational and time management skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Capable to manage several productions simultaneously.
• Creative and resourceful with problem solving.
