Job Description / Duties
The Costume Assistant produces costumes for the performing arts and maintain the College’s costume collection.
1) Produces costumes for use in performing arts productions.
-constructs costumes used in College theatre productions, in accordance with production specifications, including measuring, making and fitting costumes;
-assists guest costume designers in the production of costumes;
-communicates with faculty and student costume crew chief to ensure production specifications are met;
-provides time and cost estimates for costume production;
-trains students in the use of costume shop equipment, in basic sewing, costume construction, pattern cutting, alteration and fitting;
-trains and supervises student crews in backstage costume changes, preparation of actors and costumes for dress rehearsals, technical rehearsals and performances.
2) Manages and maintains the College’s costume collection.
-maintains a computer-based inventory of costume stock;
-ensures the costume stock is clean and in good repair;
-maintains, repairs and arranges cleaning of performance costumes;
-maintains a system for tracking College theatre costumes on loan to other theatre companies;
-cleans, organizes and maintains the costume shop, including ordering and restocking of equipment and supplies.
3) Performs other duties as assigned.
-performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment such as sewing machines;
-advises regarding the need for major equipment repairs and the need for rental equipment;
-ensures the periodic repair and maintenance of equipment.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Three years of related work experience in performing arts costume preparation;
An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and work experience may be considered.
Demonstrated ability to communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing, and over the telephone with staff, faculty, administrators and students.
Good working knowledge of English (verbal and written).
Demonstrated ability to work with a minimum of supervision, and to establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
Strong interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to work in cooperation with stagecraft coordinators and staff.
Salary: $29.53 per hour (with wage increments to a max of $32.97 per hour). Salary and wage increments are in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
