Behind the scenes at Las Fallas Valencia

Educational Session

A fiery tradition in Valencia, Spain, called Las Fallas is held annually from March 1 to 19. Festivities happen throughout the day and night, including firework shows like the parade of explosives Nit del Foc , which uses between 2 to 4 tons of gunpowder, and the religious parade La Ofrenda and the daily "noise" of the Mascleta. On the final night. March 19, the burning of freestanding monument like figures called ninots, La Cremà, makes the city a chaotic playground that reflects upon the current social and political realities of the day. With lots of self organization by the teams of falleros and falleras and minimal "municipal" intervention it's an experience that would amaze anyone in Canada. This presentation will take you on a whirlwind tour of setting up, the public showing and the final "burn".

Attendees will have a greater understanding and awareness of one of the most compelling community led fire and firework festivals in the world.
