Incorporating XR technology into the Scenic Design Process

Educational Session

Utilizing augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) as a method of presenting early design choices can be a time-saver. While showing traditional three-dimensional scaled models is one of the most effective ways of communicating ideas to a director, it is also very time consuming. While sketches are an easy method of showing initial design ideas, it can be misinterpreted due to incorrect perspective or scale, and expresses only one view of the stage. Instead of building a physical rough model for discussion, AR or VR can be an effective method of showing ideas without having to physically build a scale model, and allows for quick adjustments to be made to the design with limited expense. Citing examples from my own professional and academic productions, this presentation focuses on using the most recent updates to Vectorworks and the use of a tablet for AR previsualization, and the Meta Quest 3 VR headset for complete integration. And in all hopes, this presentation leads to a greater conversation about the use of the traditional scaled production model as a means to visualize the designer’s ideas.

Attendees will be shown a step-by-step process for showing AR on a tablet and VR on a headset. Participants are encouraged to bring their own 'displays' to play around on.

NOTE: This session will be recorded for online streaming via the CITT/ICTS Video Library (members-only). No attendee will be filmed.
