Workplace Hazard Assessments (WHAs), Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs) and Field-Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs) have been standard documents throughout various industries. They are an instrumental part to the safe operation of factories, construction sites and other industrial settings. These documents set the tone in a workplace that a) management and supervisors care about the safety of workers, and b) there is no task so important that it cannot be done safely. These documents are uncommon in theatre. Some of the barriers to their use include expertise, percieved lack of time, and debate over their efficacy. As a result, unsafe practices may continue unexamined because "that's the way we've always done it". This presentation will outline what these documents are, how they are used and what role they play in creating a safer workplace.

After attending this presentation, participants will know what a WHA, JHA and FLHA is and how they are used. They will understand how to create a risk assessment  for both standard job tasks and new set installs in their theatres. They will come away with a greater understanding that these documents are not just "more paperwork". They will be provided with templates that can be modified for their own venues.
